Dinner the previous day with Jack at the Central restaurant proved to Samantha that she was already in love. Jack was so charming she had a hard time tearing her eyes off him. There were times when she thought about what being with him as his girlfriend would feel like.
Samantha knew it was too soon to think about those things but she couldnt help it even as he had everything she needed in a man.
She had gotten home very late last night but the good thing was that Jack had dropped her off, promising to see her today again and she was really looking forward to that.
Just then, her phone gave a silent beep, indicating she had a call. Swiping her screen, she discovered it was from a strange number. Samantha wasnt in the habit of answering calls that werent stored in her phone.
She had conflicting thoughts on whether she should answer the call or not. Deciding to follow her good mind, she tapped the receive button.
‘Hello. Samantha said.
‘Samantha, hi its me.
Samantha stood still, trying to remember the voice she had heard so much that a part of it was ingrained in her mind. The voice belonged to her ex boyfriend, Charles.
She had broken up with him a few years ago and she knew that was one of the best decisions she had ever made.
Aside from being lazy, Charles was crappy in bed and he always acted like he could control her through his sick mind games. He was over confident and thought that Samantha couldnt do without him but boy was he wrong.
Samantha vividly remembered the last time he had called. Her mother answered the phone and when she hinted that Samantha was dating a billionaire, he went ballistic. This was easy for him to do since most times he called, he was usually drunk and wasted.
This time around, Samantha knew he wasnt drunk since his tone and voice was really clear and not sloppy like she was used to.
‘Hello Charles. What do you want? Samantha asked.
She moved straight to the point because she didnt want to waste time talking with him. Jack might call her any moment from now and she wanted to be ready for when he called. Charles was in her past and Samantha was determined to keep it that way.
‘Is that the way you talk to an old friend. he chuckled.
Once upon a time, his deep husky voice did wonders to her body but right now, she was very irritated by it.
‘What do you want, Charles? I havent got all day. Samantha said.
‘Alright. You were with one of the Evans brothers yesterday, the younger one Jack Evans. he said.
Samantha knew she was bound to hear about her date with Jack anytime soon because he was a public figure. She wouldnt be surprised if she got to find out later on that a photographer or low grade blogger had been stalking them.
‘Yes. Is there a problem with that? Samantha asked.
‘There is. Samantha, I need you to stop whatever youre doing with him. Its dangerous, you have to believe me. he said.
‘And what makes you think Ill believe whatever comes out of your mouth? Samantha snapped.
She was getting angry now and she didnt like it because she rarely got angry. Unlike her father who was like a roaring flame, Samantha was much calmer and even up till this day, she was glad she didnt take his character.
‘Please, you just have to believe me. Im concerned about you and wouldnt want to see you get hurt. he said.
‘Youre just jealous, I know that. Its written all over your voice. Samantha laughed.
‘Yes, I admit it. Im jealous but this is far more than jealousy Samantha. This has to do with your life and dating someone like Jack would be a bloody mistake on your part. he said.
‘Youre trying to keep me from moving on and I wont allow it. We had our time together Charles and its time for me to move on to something and someone better. Now, unless you have anything else to say Im afraid Im going to cut this call. Samantha said.
‘Youve always been so stubborn and I hope you change. Charles said.
‘Goodbye Charles. Samantha said before cutting the call.
She placed her phone on the kitchen island, staring at it as if willing him to call back. Deep down, she found what he said disturbing but she waved it off as a sign of jealousy.
Even when they were still dating, Charles showed a lot of jealousy when other men talked to her. He was controlling and Samantha was quite glad that she was able to escape.
‘Why cant they just be happy for me? Samantha muttered.
She sighed, filling a pot with water. She wanted to make spaghetti and meatballs, a food her mother seemed to like. Just as she put the water to boil, her phone began ringing again.
‘This better be good. she muttered.
Samantha didnt bother checking the caller ID. She answered the phone and for several seconds, the person at the other end remained silent.
‘Im going to have to end the call if you dont speak. Samantha said.
She was sick and tired of the mind games people played and she wasnt going to stand it any longer.
‘Wait. Its King.
‘"King. Oh hey, how are you doing? Samantha said.
She did a good job in hiding her surprise. She didnt remember giving him her number but she realized that Jack could have given him or he might have gotten it from the blog.
‘Im fine. Listen, Im going to be quick. Youre making a mistake by being with Jack. King said.
Samantha chuckled, wiping the lone tear that slid down her eyes. She didnt understand why everyone was suddenly against her having any relationship with Jack when he was the nicest man she had ever known.
‘Why King or are you suddenly jealous too? Samantha said.
‘Its not about being jealous of Samantha. Hes my brother, I know him better than you do and trust me, you dont even want to be near him. King said.
There was a pleading tone in his voice that kept her on the edge but she dismissed it. All she knew was that they were all jealous. She was finding her happiness in the one man that made her smile even without putting in so much effort. That was something she would never let slip away from her hands.
‘Ive heard you king and Ill think about it. Samantha said.
She had no intentions to do that. She just told him that to get him off the phone, she wasnt about to hear any more warnings. King cut the call and she was quite glad he did it first.
Samanthas mind was on Jack and the happiness she felt whenever she was with him. That was never going to change and she was determined to keep it that way.
