Ava Thompson was just about to dodge when a long arm pulled her back, and a handsome figure stood protectively in front of her, catching the coffee cup that Sofia Davis had thrown.
In the next moment, the man’s gaze turned cold, and he tossed the cup back.
“Ah…”
Ava didn’t know how he did it, but as the cup flew back, the cup and lid separated and hit both Ethan Carter and Sofia Davis simultaneously.
Sofia cried out as she covered her forehead, while Ethan groaned in pain.
Ava was stunned at the scene.
The man was none other than Jason King. Without waiting for Ethan and Sofia to register his presence, he grabbed Ava Thompson and pulled her out.
The two men in suits waiting outside were as shocked as if they had seen a UFO when Jason King emerged with Ava in tow.
Once outside, Jason released the still-dazed Ava Thompson and started walking ahead.
Behind them, the two suited men exchanged astonished looks.
One named Leo nudged his companion, saying, “Carter, did you see that? They’re holding hands!”
The man named Carter had a stoic expression, coldly replying, “I believe Danfeng eyes see more clearly than squinty ones.”
“Damn it, who are you calling squinty-eyed?”
“Anyone who responds is squinty-eyed.”
“Carter, your small eyes can see the essence; that woman is the first to hold the president’s hand!”
This was the first time their president had any physical contact with a woman unrelated to him. Was this really their aloof president, who had always kept women at arms length?
While they debated, Jason King had already let go of Ava Thompson.
Coming back to her senses, Ava was surprised to see him come to her aid and quickly thanked him, “Thank you for helping me just now.”
As she thanked Jason, her phone buzzed with a message from her classmate and friend, Tracy Li.
After reading the message, her expression shifted, and she hurriedly looked at Jason. “I’m sorry, I have an urgent matter to attend to. I have to go now.”
With that, she turned and rushed off.
Leo walked over, puzzled, and asked Jason, “President, who was that woman? Why did you save her?”
Jason cast a sharp, piercing look at Leo, exuding a kingly aura. “Do I need to explain myself to you?”
Receiving the displeased gaze, Leo quickly nodded, “No need, no need.”

Three days later, at Peak Club 98.
“Ava Thompson, listen carefully. I’ve been toying with you all along. I, Ethan Carter, have never loved you. The one I love is your cousin, Sofia Davis.”
Ethan’s cold and heartless words echoed in Ava’s mind, her light brown almond-shaped eyes glistening with tears.
She wasn’t sad because of Ethan Carter’s betrayal; she was mourning for herself.
She had devoted herself to a man, only to be met with cruelty and humiliation in return. She thought she would never allow herself to fall for another man again.
If Ethan hadn’t saved her eight years ago, she would never have agreed to his proposal so easily.
Tonight was her first time at a bar, and she had been dragged here by her classmates.
Noticing her distress, Tracy Li, who was sitting next to her, asked with concern, “Ava, what’s wrong?”
Ava took a deep breath, forcing a smile as she shook her head. “It’s nothing.”
She didn’t like sharing her unhappiness with those around her; none of her classmates knew that Ethan Carter had once been her fiancé.
“Ava Thompson, what are you thinking? Don’t look so glum; come on, have a drink!” Mark Zhang offered her a glass of alcohol.
