Before Sherry could say anything, Alfred had written his name on the consent and returned it to the doctor.
When the doctor left, he sat back at the bedside with a cup of warm water in his hand.
"Have some faith in modern science", he tried to make his voice relaxed and humorous: "You will be fine."
"Thank you…"
Sherry answered in a choked voice.
Alfred had expressed his obsession with her several times, but she was so dedicated to Mayer at that time that she directly ignored Alfreds favor.
Now, he became the only one who knows her condition and hopes her to recover.
Karma is really a bitch.
A week passed before anyone noticed.
The surgery was very successful, but the doctor was not very optimistic about Sherrys condition.
He warned her that she needed to stay alert to prevent the cancer cells from spreading.
Taking care of Sherry almost became Alfreds daily routine, and he would always come to the hospital when there was time.
Sherry was deeply moved but was also very guilty.
Because she knew her body might not allow her to return his favor.
After printing out the latest medical examination form on the self-service machine, Sherry slowly walked into the hospital corridor.
On the one hand, she could get some fresh air.
On the other hand, this is good for the healing of her stitching wounds.
A gust of wind came over and the report in Sherry was blown off, twirling in the air and finally falling on the ground.
She was about to go pick it up, but another hand was ahead of hers.
Sherry raised her head and was going to thank the helping hand, while Mayers face forced her to swallow back the thanks.
"Cancer?"
Mayer took a quick glance at the report and stared at Sherry with a complicated look: "How long do you expect to hide this from me?"
Sherry stood on the spot, shocked and secretly delighted.
Was he caring about me?
"As long as I can…"
She mumbled with her head down.
"Im sorry", Mayer paused and changed into a sarcastic tone: "Im sorry to tell you that you have no talent in acting. Not a little bit."
"What?"
Sherry could not believe her ears.
Thats not the reaction she expected.
"Taking fake pills, forging reports, what else can you do?"
"Mayer, what are you talking about?"
"Save your tricks!"
Mayers words were filled with sarcasm: "Im not that stupid to be tricked by your faked cancer! If you think Im gonna change my idea out of compassion, you are completely wrong!"
Sherry eventually understood what the whole farce was.
Mayer Goodwin, the man she was willing to devote herself for, had nothing but doubt when seeing this report.
She regarded him as her whole world, while he regarded her a thief, a liar!
"What a shame."
She suddenly laughed: "I lose!"
Lose to a stupid man who thought he was clever enough to see through anything.
She was completely lost when falling in love with a conceited idiot!
Seeing the smile on Sherrys face, Mayer suddenly felt a queer sense of restlessness which overwhelmed his complacency of discerning a lie.
To relieve the weird feeling, he slummed the report on the ground and strode away.
The wound on Sherrys abdomen had not healed yet, so it was literally impossible for her to bend over and pick up the report.
She just stood there and stared at the report, with her eyes gradually turning red.
Alfred didnt see Sherry in the ward.
As he searched for her and came over, what came into his sight was the poor womans desolate and thin figure.
Taking a deep breath to hold back the tingle in his heart, he hurried over and picked up the report.
"The doctor asked you to stay happy", he patted her shoulder and comforted her with sincere concern: "Its good for your health."
Feeling the warm hand on her back, Sherry felt even sadder.
Alfred would care about her feelings, while Mayer would first consider the purpose of her crying.
How blind she was to marry such a heartless man and sleep with him for three years!
The more she thought, she more wanted to cry.
The moisture in her eyes gradually gathered into tears and then welled up.
She tried to hold them back, but there was no use.
Alfred was in an evident fluster and he instinctively raised his hand to wipe away Sherrys tears.
But in the end, he once again held his instinct and chose to give her a paper towel: "The doctor will certainly reprimand me when seeing your tears…"
It took a long while for Sherry to recover from the collapsing sorrow, but she was still in a bad mood.
Feeling her frustration, Alfred worked even harder to make her happy.
The next day, Sherry felt a little better.
Because she could be discharged after the cell screening.
Alfred knew that Sherry didnt have a residence now, so he proposed to rent her house near his house, which would make it more convenient for him to take care of her.
But Sherry politely declined his favor.
"Dont bother", Sherry said faintly: "Ill just stay in the hotel. After the result of the cell screening comes out. Regardless its good or bad, I will leave this city."
She knew that a hysterectomy would not cure her.
The best it could do was to give her some more years to live.
So——
She was going to leave this city and stay away from that man she loved.
Then she would find a place where no one could find her and wait until the end of her life.
This was her last wish.
