Molly had envisioned a hundred scenarios of reuniting with Jack, but she never thought that after five years, it would be when she was at her weakest.
At the banquet, she was deliberately plied with drinks by the partners, and she could only resignedly take one glass after another. After all, she was the one seeking favors.
She found an excuse to go to the bathroom to vomit, hoping to sober up a bit. The contract hadnt been secured yet, and her mission wasnt accomplished. If she didnt close this deal tonight, her bonus for the month would be gone.
After reapplying her makeup and regaining her professional smile, Molly opened the door and walked out, brushing past a man in the hallway. She was shocked.
Damn it, wasnt that man Jack?
Molly quickly moved forward, returning to her private room, praying that Jack hadnt seen her.
But if Molly had turned back, she would have found Jack staring at her back until she returned to her private room.
The party didnt wind down until almost one in the morning, and the contract was finally secured.
Molly was already a bit drunk. The manager volunteered to take Molly home, but she refused. Molly wasnt oblivious to the managers ulterior motives; she just endured them out of necessity.
She mustered her strength to reach the entrance but found no taxis in sight. Molly had to walk forward, hoping to hail a cab, only to find a car that had been following her since the hotel entrance.
Seeing the familiar face reflected in the car window, Molly thought sadly but with a hint of happiness, he had seen her after all.
But at this moment, Molly was not ready to face Jack and didnt want to. She could only walk forward, hoping to quickly catch a taxi and leave. In her haste, she twisted her ankle and had to stop to rub her foot.
Jack had been following Molly from the hotel entrance. He sped up when she did, and slowed down when she did, but he never showed himself until Molly twisted her ankle and he couldnt help but get out of the car to see how she was doing.
Jack walked up to Molly, saw her heavily made-up face, and all the caring words he had were swallowed back. His first words were cold.
"Has the Smith family fallen so far that Tom has to let you go out and entertain people?"
Molly was shocked. Was this her Jack? He was still tall and handsome, with an added charm of a mature man, but the sarcasm from his mouth was something Molly couldnt accept.
Thinking about it, he must still hate her. She was the one who gave him a promise and then broke it. She was the one who was wrong.
"Why, you dared to betray me five years ago, and now youve become mute?"
Molly was not the type to bow down and be soft. She held back her tears and looked up at him stubbornly, speaking one word at a time, "Im willing to go out and entertain people. What does it have to do with you? Whats our relationship that you have the right to judge me?" He could say whatever he wanted about her, but why involve Tom? Tom had already done so much for her.
Jack was speechless for a moment, and the two fell silent, with only the awkwardness flowing in the air. Finally, Jack spoke first.
"Where do you live? Ill take you home so you dont get hit by a car in the middle of the night and no one knows. Or do you need me to inform Tom to come and see what a mess youre in now?"
Jacks tone was nothing but sarcastic. She was the one who had given up on him first, so he had no reason to be merciful now. But Jack immediately realized something else: even at this moment, he still couldnt admit her relationship with Tom because he asked where she lived, not where her home was.
Molly was taken aback, not expecting Jack to offer to take her home. She was about to nod habitually, but then she heard Jacks sarcastic tone, and her heart cooled. Indeed, he had every right to mock her now, didnt he?
Then she thought about it, she had nothing to do with Jack anymore, and she owed him enough. She didnt want to owe him anything more. The sooner she cut herself clean from him, the better it would be for him.
She no longer deserved him. He deserved better. With this thought, Molly immediately refused Jack and said in a cold tone, "No need, we have no relationship anymore, I will take a taxi home by myself, and thank you for your concern, but its not necessary, I cant bear it."
Jack didnt expect her to refuse him like this. Although his tone was a bit harsh, what she had done to him was nothing compared to this. Jack suddenly became angry and said, "Molly, you owe me, not the other way around, youd better understand that."
Then he turned and got in the car and left. Molly stood there, thinking about what Jack had said, and muttered to herself, "Jack, yes, its what I owe you."
