Rachel Davis returned home from her overnight shift at the hospital, and it was already half past eleven.
As soon as she opened the door, she keenly smelled the scent of a couples intimacy lingering in the air.
Had Jason Thompson brought a woman back again?
Her heart sank, and Rachel quickened her pace towards the bedroom.
Inside the half-open bedroom, a couple was entwined.
Faced with such a scene, Rachel was already numb.
She walked over and knocked on the door to signal the people inside that she was back, then sat on the sofa to eat an apple.
Halfway through the apple, the room finally fell silent.
Jason came out with a towel wrapped around his lower body, holding the woman, his eyes lazily looking at Rachel who was eating the apple attentively, and commanded, "Rachel Davis, Im hungry, go make me something to eat."
Rachel looked up, her tone cold, "Ive eaten, and Im not hungry yet."
"What does it matter if youve eaten or not? I said Im hungry, go make me something to eat," he spoke rudely and overbearingly.
"Why should I cook for you?" Rachel asked with amusement.
"Because youre my wife. Rachel Davis, dont forget, it was you who begged and cried to marry me. How come youre not even willing to serve your husband now?"
Rachel threw the remains of the fruit into the trash can, stood up, and replied coldly, "Theres no law in marriage that says a wife must cook for her husband when she comes home."
Her gaze fell on the woman full of a certain flavor next to Jason, a bitter smile tugging at the corner of her mouth, she emphasized word by word, "Theres certainly no obligation to cook for a cheating husband and his mistress."
"Ha." Jason sneered, released the model, signaled for her to go back, then strode in front of Rachel, his eyes coldly staring at her, "When you married me three years ago, it wasnt what you said."
"When I married you three years ago, you hadnt gone too far as to bring women home to mess around," Rachel was equally unyielding, a strong smell of gunpowder filling the air between them.
"Why, now you think Im going too far?" Jasons face was full of sarcasm, "When you personally drove your sister to her death, why didnt you think you were going too far?"
Rachels clear black and white eyes suddenly widened, after a while, she forcibly restrained the emotions surging upwards, and said calmly, "Ive been busy for 24 hours, Im tired, Im going to take a nap. If youre hungry, order takeout by yourself, or you can call that woman back to cook for you."
A flash of disappointment flew quickly through Jasons eyes.
Why, why no matter what he did, no matter how excessive it was, she could always bear it?
What on earth does she have to do to take the initiative to propose divorce, to take the initiative to let him go.
After saying that, Rachel walked towards the clean guest room, preparing to catch up on sleep.
Just as she closed the door, her mobile phone rang, it was Grace Thompson. Rachel hesitated for a moment, then picked up: "Grace, whats the matter?"
"Sister-in-law, youre off work?" On the other end of the phone, Graces voice was cheerful, as if she was happily shopping.
"Mm."
"Ill tell you, mom has booked a table at Erics Grand Hotel tonight, inviting the family to have dinner and get together. My boyfriend will come too. Sister-in-law, you and my brother must come on time."
"Okay, I got it." Sleepiness had already hit, and Rachel didnt know what she was mumbling in a daze. Grace said something else on the phone, she didnt hear clearly, and she fell asleep before she knew it.
At four in the afternoon.
Rachel woke up from a sleep and thought of the phone call that had been interrupted at some point, and immediately got up, put on makeup, changed into decent clothes, and went to Erics Grand Hotel in Jasons car.
Jason was cold all the way, without saying a word to her.
Their couple would fall into an awkward silence when they were alone, and their mutual dislike was a hundred times worse than that of strangers. Rachel was used to it, she looked at the scenery passing by the window in a daze, and in a trance, she arrived at the hotel.
...
Erics Grand Hotel.
The Thompson family booked a large private room that could accommodate twenty people, but only about ten people actually came to eat.
At the dining table, three generations of children and grandchildren were full of smiles, clinking glasses and exchanging greetings, but the smiles did not reach their eyes. For them, this was just a play of hypocrisy that had to be performed to create a harmonious family image for the matriarch of the Thompson family.
Grace came the latest, and with her was her newly dating boyfriend, Kevin Howard.
Grace stood on the same side as her brother, and she has always looked down on Rachel, but today, for some reason, she was either personally calling to invite, or extremely enthusiastic to Rachel, showing concern and offering tea and wine.
Halfway through the banquet.
Rachel felt uneasy after drinking the glass of wine that Grace offered. She forced a calm face, slightly adjusted her sitting position, but the strange feeling from below was very clear, as if there was fire burning there, and her thin underwear was almost penetrated. This was a shame she had never had before.
She vaguely realized that the problem might be in the glass of wine that Grace handed over. But she had no evidence, and she couldnt say anything in public.
When the next wave of heat came, Rachel stood up abruptly, her flushed face facing her mother-in-law, Margaret Thompson, and said, "Mother-in-law, Im going to the bathroom."
After that, she picked up her bag and hurried out of the private room. Following behind was Graces voice: "Mom, my sister-in-law seems to be a bit uncomfortable, Ill go see her..."
...
The more anxious Grace chased, the more fear rose in Rachels heart. In a desperate situation, she gave up the idea of going to the hospital and quickly ran into the womens restroom, locking the door.
In a moment, Graces voice came from outside the restroom.
She stood at the door, a cold smile appeared on her delicately made-up face, and she knocked on the door lightly: "Sister-in-law, are you okay? Where are you uncomfortable?"
Rachel didnt speak, she sat on the toilet, her teeth clenched. Her eyes were fixed on the lock of the toilet, and the cold sweat that kept falling revealed her inner panic.
Her hearing became extremely sharp under the tension of her nerves. Grace walked to the door of the restroom, and faintly, Rachel heard the conversation between Grace and her new boyfriend, Kevin, coming from there.
"Ah Kun, your sister-in-law is in the innermost room now, you have to take good care of her."
"There are so many people here, what if she struggles..."
"What are you afraid of? The medicine takes effect in ten minutes, and you wont be rational in half an hour. At that time, you can do whatever you want, right?"
"Okay, if something happens, you have to cover for me,Hey hey hey..."
Rachels back was covered in cold sweat, as if a basin of cold water had been poured over her head. She didnt expect it, she never thought that Grace would have this idea.
