A text message from an unfamiliar number greeted Scarlett as she entered the elevator, containing several photos. In the photos were images of her ex-husband, Noah Calhoun, with another woman. One picture displayed two hands clasped together, one tanned and one fair, both sporting the same diamond ring from D&Fs limited collection, the diamonds as large as pigeon eggs.
Scarlett recognized the number; she just couldnt fathom why, even after she had gracefully stepped aside, this woman felt the need to send her such provocative photos. Yesterday it was a photo of him blowing on her eyes, and today it was these. She wondered what the next day would bring.
Annoyed, Scarlett deleted the photos. Immediately, another message from the same number arrived, but this time Scarlett didnt bother to look and deleted it straight away.
Upon arriving at the company, from the security guard to the cleaning lady, receptionist, and other employees, everyone looked at her with a kind of hesitant expression.
Her mood, which she had managed to regulate, was once again spoiled when she reached her office. Isabella Swan greeted her with a surprised stand as Scarlett entered.
"Scarlett, youre finally here," Isabella said, feigning delight.
Scarlett frowned. "What are you doing here?"
Isabella stuck her tongue out playfully. "Well, of course, Im here for something, Scarlett. You wouldnt turn me away, would you?"
"Actually, I would. Id have nightmares if I saw your face. Please leave, Isabella."
Isabella paled slightly. She had not expected that Scarlett, now a woman cast aside, would not be grateful for her, the soon-to-be Mrs. Calhouns, condescension.
"Scarlett, dont be so ungrateful. Im not here to apologize, and Noah and I are getting married. Since youre a witness to our love, it would be remiss not to invite you to the wedding."
Scarlett made a face as if she wanted to vomit, and Isabellas expression turned a little green.
"You, a loser, what do you have to be smug about?" Isabella retorted.
"Ah... So this is called being smug?" Scarlett feigned a sudden realization. "My apologies, Isabella. Was there anything else you wanted to say? If not, the door is right there. Goodbye."
Isabella, left speechless and furious, shot Scarlett another glare before stomping away on her heels.
After Isabella left, Scarlett picked up the wedding invitation on her desk. It was more exquisite and luxurious than her own wedding had been. The invitation was printed, and the only one who had delivered it was Isabella. Shouldnt Noah be inseparable from his true love?
Scarlett had intended to throw it away but changed her mind as she was leaving work. Why not go? They wanted her there to see her at her worst, but was she at her worst? Scarlett glanced at her reflection in the computer screen. She had made a fortune from the divorce, and with the company of a younger man, she was more radiant than ever. She looked like an unmarried girl in her prime, not at all the haggard mess from the recent past.
So, why not attend? She just wouldnt go alone. Thinking of Edwards clinginess, Scarlett couldnt help but recall the past few days. The young ones were indeed energetic; she could hardly keep up.
