Edward Rochester deftly sidestepped John Reeds punch, leaving it to fall through the air empty-handed. A sneer surfaced on his cold, handsome face, "She is my wife, and I can take her wherever I please. Its not for you to worry about, Mr. Reed."
"Do you have any idea what Jane has sacrificed for you? How can you be so heartless?" John accused, his voice filled with indignation. Edward had used Jane as a shield, making John hesitant to act.
"Really? I am this way because of you two. John Reed, I considered you my closest friend, yet you betrayed me with my woman, and forced me to marry her. How should I react kindly? Should I thank you for the green hat youve given me?" Edwards voice dripped with sarcasm as he forcefully removed the IV tube from Janes hand.
Jane was too weak to even speak, and John was furious, "Edward Rochester, put her down this instant. She donated a kidney to Blanche Ingram just to be with you."
Edwards rough movements paused for a moment as he looked down at Jane, who was in a semi-conscious state. His doubt was fleeting, quickly overshadowed by scorn, "Do you really expect me to believe such a tale? Shes clearly just weak from an abortion."
He half-carried, half-dragged Jane out of the room, while John shouted, "Edward Rochester, you dont deserve Janes love."
"Get out of my way. If anything happens to Blanche because of this delay, dont blame me for not considering our family ties," Edward warned. Blanche had suffered from a wound infection and had lost a lot of blood during surgery. She had a rare blood type, and he had no choice but to come to Jane for help.
"Again, for Blanche Ingram? Jane has already given her a kidney; what more could she possibly want?" John regretted ever helping Jane in the first place. Had he known it would lead to this, he should have stopped her from making such a foolish decision.
Blanche Ingram was the daughter-in-law that Gu Hongying, Edwards mother, had approved of. Edwards father had passed away early, and it was his mother who had single-handedly raised him and supported the familys business empire.
Blanches mother and Gu Hongying had been close friends since childhood, and the two families had intended to unite through marriage.
However, an accident half a year ago had brought Edward and Jane together through adversity, and they had fallen in love.
After returning from the ordeal, Edward confessed his true feelings to Blanche. Unable to accept this, she fell ill. The doctors said that without a kidney transplant, she only had a month to live.
Edward was consumed by self-blame, and Jane, unable to bear seeing him in such pain, secretly went to the hospital for a match. She made a deal with the Ingram family: she would donate a kidney to Blanche, and in return, they would break off the engagement with Edward and allow them to be together.
Everyone except Edward knew about this, including Gu Hongying, but now they had conspired against her. Yet, Edward Rochester did not believe a word that John Reed said!
"Its just a little blood, not like its asking for her life," Edward said with a lightness that was belied by the cruelty of his words.
John laughed bitterly, anger turning his voice into a hiss, "Edward Rochester, you treat her so poorly, are you not afraid her dirty blood will tarnish the purity of your precious Blanche Ingram?"
His brow furrowed, Edward bent down to pick up Jane, "The doctors will make sure of that!"
"Wenbo, dont say any more. Consider it my way of seeing things through to the end," Jane looked up at Edward, her voice barely a whisper but filled with resolve, "I can save her, but you must agree to my three conditions."
"Lets get the blood test done first, maybe your blood really is infected," Edward said with a mocking tone, deliberately trying to humiliate her.
John was shaking with rage. The woman he cherished was being treated by Edward as if she were nothing more than a speck of dirty blood on his shoe.
Seeing this, Jane managed a weak smile, "Dont be sad for me. This is my choice. Even if its hell, I will charge through it."
