On the cold operating table, under the harsh white light, Daisy Buchanan squinted her eyes. Doctors and nurses, fearing her resistance, pinned her wrists and ankles down. The cold ultrasound probe scanned her abdomen, and the doctor performing the B-scan reported to Calpurnia Finch, "Ms. Finch, although the patient has lost a lot of blood, the gestational sac is still intact. Theres a chance to save the fetus if we attempt to maintain the pregnancy. What do you think...?"
Before the doctor could finish suggesting whether to try to save the pregnancy, Calpurnia Finch interrupted with displeasure, "Did you forget what Mr. Finch arranged for you to do?"
The operating room fell into an eerie silence, so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
The door suddenly burst open, and footsteps filled with anger and disorder approached rapidly.
"Bitch, I want you to pay with blood for what youve done!"
In the blink of an eye, Atticus Finch had a scalpel against Daisys neck, his eyes filled with blood, brewing a storm of darkness that threatened to annihilate her at any moment.
The blade cut through her skin, and sharp pain radiated.
"You know my parents are dying because of you!"
Daisys eyes widened in shock, and she shook her head desperately, "Atticus, it wasnt me! It was Calpurnia who had Tom Robinson take me away. He gave me a bottle of water in the car, and after that, I fell asleep. I woke up in the drivers seat, I have no idea what happened!"
"Uncle and Aunt have been so kind to me; I have no reason to harm them!"
Her last sentence, Daisy shouted with all her might.
"You do, you definitely do! You were afraid that if your affair and the child in your belly were discovered, you would be driven out of the house, and they would be the only obstacles left!"
Not giving Atticus time to think, Calpurnia stepped forward and shouted at her, as if she had seen through the truth.
The knife at her neck went in a bit deeper, and Daisy could feel the warm blood sliding down her neck.
She looked up at Atticus, and the tenderness in his eyes was gone, replaced by a coldness as if it had just been taken from the bottom of a dark, sunless sea.
Sharp but not dazzling, yet hurting invisibly.
"Do you think... I would believe you?"
The tip of the knife pricked her skin, resting on the large artery. Atticus whispered into her ear, as cold as death, like a vengeful spirit from hell, "No matter what you say, I wont believe it. All I want now is to flay you and let you pay with your life!"
Daisy was terrified to the extreme, had he completely believed Calpurnia?
Despair to the extreme, Daisy could no longer shed a tear, and suddenly she laughed, "Since you hate me so much, would it be too cheap for me if you just cut my carotid artery? Atticus Finch, you should let me live a life worse than death."
With a courage that came out of nowhere, she broke free, her neck scraping against the sharp blade and leaving a long bloody mark, sat up straight, picked up a pair of scissors nearby, and stabbed it into her abdomen.
Atticus, do you know how much I want to keep this child...
But I know, if I keep the child, Calpurnia wont let you go, and now I can only protect you in this way.
Her heart convulsed with pain, coupled with the physical pain, Daisy felt as if she was about to shatter, almost fainting.
She gritted her teeth, pulled out the scissors, and gently stabbed it above her heart, and the bright red blood quickly dyed her white shirt.
"Atticus, I will keep stabbing until you say you believe me. If I bleed out and you still dont believe Im innocent, Ill go ahead and accompany our child who never got a chance to see this world."
Daisy looked at him with a bitter smile, the scissors moving down, cutting her wrist.
If my death can exchange for your life, Atticus, I am willing.
I love you, so much that I can bear all the sins and punishments, and die for you.
