Clare Yates left the hospital with a bitter smile, feeling as if fate had played a cruel joke on her. A late-stage cancer diagnosis was not enough; even the child she had so desperately wanted was diagnosed as malformed during her pregnancy check-up.
She mechanically got out of the car, tore up the pregnancy report, and threw it into the trash before dialingshao hua Shaws number. It took three attempts before the line was finally answered.
Immediately, a cold voice came through the phone: "Mrs. Shaw, what can I do for you?"
"Im pregnant, and the doctor says the child is malformed," Clare said, her eyes hollow, her thoughts hidden from others.
"Mrs. Shaw, weve barely seen each other for a few days, and youve learned to sleep with other men?" The icy voice was like a cold blade, piercing Clares heart and slashing through, causing her unbearable pain.
Before Clare could explain, the call was disconnected.
She had no choice but to suppress her own loss, gently touch her slightly swollen belly, and return to her empty home.
In the dead of night, the door was kicked open, and the strong smell of alcohol jolted Clare awake from her light sleep.
Before she could even call out his name, she was flipped over, andshao hua Shaws familiar breath brushed past her ear.
His bony hands tore her nightgown, and the other pressed her face fiercely into the pillow, not even wanting to look at her during the act.
Then, shao hua Shaw thrust forcefully, invading her...
The intense pain caused Clare to tightly clutch the bedsheet and cry out, "Shao Hua, it hurts!"
"Hurts? Is that what you say when youre in another mans bed?"
"... I havent! Ive only ever been with you!"
Clare closed her eyes bitterly, the man who could always turn a blind eye to her deep affection.
"Three years ago, when you ruined Maggies reputation, you excused yourself like this too!"
Clare felt as if she had been doused in cold water, biting her lip, the chill piercing to the bone.
He never trusted her...
After venting, shao hua Shaw prepared to return to another room to bathe and sleep as usual.
Clare, however, sat up with her nearly shattered body, pulled the blanket over her, and after much thought, finally spoke: "I want to terminate the pregnancy."
Shao Hua stopped in his tracks, turned to look at her, and a cold smile tugged at the corner of his mouth: "Since youre pregnant, just give birth. Its perfect for heart matching with Maggie Tang."
Clares face drained of all color upon hearing this...
She looked at Shao Hua with a pale face and stammered, "Shao Hua, have you ever thought that if the child is born and the heart matching with Maggie Tang is unsuccessful, what then?"
"Hes just a deformed child. If the matching is unsuccessful, let him die peacefully."
Shao Huas cold voice was like a poisoned blade, accurately striking Clares heart.
Twelve years of unrequited love, three years of marriage, Clare had thought she could move this man, naively believing that one day he would understand that he did not love Maggie Tang, but her, Clare Yates.
Now, she finally understood that no matter what she did for Shao Hua, it could not compare to the absence of Maggie Tang.
Her heart turned to ash, what was the point of holding onto these illusory dreams.
She cast her eyes down in self-mockery, and after a long while, she spoke in a desolate tone.
"Shao Hua, lets divorce!"
