Scarlett OHara stood at the foot of the Cullen Enterprises skyscraper, gazing up at the towering structure that pierced the sky. Her eyes were fixed on the top floor, as if she could see the man who loomed over everything from here.
How could Melanie Hamilton bear such animosity towards her, wanting to deliver her into the hands of that man? The fate that awaited her was, in Scarletts mind, nothing but endless torment.
Her phone chimed with a message from Rhett Butler. "Ive already spoken with Mr. Cullen. You can go straight up."
Pushing her fears aside, Scarlett took a deep breath and walked into the building. Sure enough, an assistant was waiting in the lobby to escort her upstairs.
On the eighty-eighth floor, in the corner office, Edward Cullen watched as the woman entered. A cruel smile played on his lips. "Scarlett OHara, I didnt know youve been right under my nose for the past five years."
His voice was clear and pleasant, yet it carried an unmistakable cruelty.
Rhett had called him earlier, talking about sending a gift. He hadnt paid much attention, but it turned out the gift was the future Mrs. Butler. How amusing.
Scarlett stood tall, her voice steady. "Mr. Cullen, if you wanted to see me, a phone call would have sufficed."
What methods Edward might employ, Scarlett was all too aware. In both the white and black societies, no one dared to defy his orders.
Edward dismissed his assistant with a wave and called Rhett directly. Scarlett could clearly hear Rhetts excuses, almost swearing that he had never touched her.
After hanging up the phone, Edward appraised Scarlett before him. Five years on, she seemed to have lived quite comfortably, becoming one of the top five designers in New York City. How much sleep and experience had she traded to get there, he wondered with a sneer!
Without warning, Edward lifted her and placed her on the desk, his actions intrusive.
"Edward Cullen!" Scarletts voice changed in alarm. The events of five years ago, the gap of those years, how could he treat her this way the moment they met again!
Edward caught her wrists, his lips close to her ear, his hot breath raising goosebumps on her skin as he whispered, "Five years apart, and you still respond so readily. Does any mans touch make you react like this, hmm?"
Scarlett was stunned. She had expected no affection from Edward Cullen, but to hear such words from her former lover, it stung deeply.
She straightened her clothes, her voice as light as the wind. "Mr. Cullen, I thought Rhett made it clear. He never touched me."
Edward sat down, his expression languid and indifferent. "So what if he didnt? Do you expect me to call each of your admirers to confirm?"
At that moment, the office door opened, and a woman with Exquisite makeup walked in. Upon seeing Scarlett, her eyebrows furrowed, and she linked her arm through Edwards, asking, "Ethan, who is she?"
Edward replied with a mix of affection and helplessness, "Just an ex-girlfriend."
