Scarlett OHara had no recollection of how she had burst out of the hotel and made her way back to the wedding venue where her fiancé, Tom Joad, awaited her.
In a state of disarray, she tumbled out of the taxi and rushed straight towards the hotel, her heart pounding with dread and anticipation. She was no longer pure, and the events of the previous night weighed heavily on her conscience. Yet, she believed that their three-year love story would withstand this trial. She was determined to tell Tom the truth, hoping that he would understand and forgive her.
She had been drugged and betrayed, and it wasnt her fault. All she needed was to explain, and he would see the truth. At least, thats what she told herself as she hurried towards the bridal suite.
Scarlett reached the door and pushed it open, only to be met with a swift figure that slapped her across the face with brutal force. The impact was immediate and shocking, sending her crashing to the floor. Her cheek burned with a fiery pain as she looked up to see her sister, Catherine "Kitty" Genovese, glaring down at her with a twisted expression of disgust and rage.
"You disgraceful thing, how dare you show up here?!" Kitty hissed, her voice laced with venom.
Scarletts mind reeled as she tried to comprehend the situation. How could Kitty know about what happened? She had been so careful, so desperate to escape.
"I cant believe you would sleep with another man on the eve of your wedding to Tom, and then have the audacity to show your face here!" Kitty continued, her words slicing through Scarlett like a knife.
Scarletts face drained of color as she stared at her sister in disbelief. She had to make her understand, to make her see the truth.
"Kitty, its not what you think!" Scarlett cried out, her voice trembling with desperation. "I was set up. I was drugged and trapped, but I managed to escape. I never willingly—"
Before she could finish, Tom Joad rose to his feet, his expression a mask of fury and betrayal. He threw a stack of photos at her, the edges cutting her cheek and leaving a streak of blood.
The photos were damning, showing her entering and leaving a strange room in various states of undress. The implications were clear, and they broke her heart.
"Scarlett, youre disgusting," Tom spat, his voice filled with loathing. "You had your fun with another man all night, didnt you?"
Scarletts heart clenched painfully as she looked down at the photos, each one a stark reminder of her helplessness. But she couldnt give up, she had to make him listen.
"You dont understand," she pleaded, tears welling up in her eyes. "Weve been together for three years. I love you, and we were supposed to get married. I would never—"
Kitty interjected, her voice dripping with false concern. "Scarlett, why didnt you call for help? Tom gave you that necklace with a panic button. Why didnt you use it?"
Scarletts hand flew to her neck, only to find the necklace still there, intact. It was a cruel twist of fate, a final blow to her already shattered dignity.
"I... I tried," she stammered, her voice breaking. "But it was too late. By the time I realized, it was already... "
Kitty moved closer to Tom, her arm sliding around his in a gesture of comfort that was anything but innocent. "Tom, Im so sorry about all of this. Ive been working day and night to prepare for your wedding, and to see it ruined like this..."
Toms gaze softened as he looked at Kitty, and in that moment, Scarlett saw the truth. The betrayal cut deeper than any physical pain could.
"Kitty, dont compare yourself to her," Tom said gently. "Youre a lady of the Kennedy Family, poised and virtuous. Shes nothing but a filthy, wanton woman."
As they moved away, leaving Scarlett on the floor, she felt her world crumbling around her. The man she loved, the sister she trusted, all part of a grand deception that had left her broken and alone.
