Lily Whites breath hitched, almost unable to believe what she was hearing.
"Are you asking me... for a divorce?" she asked, her voice trembling.
Looking at Lily with a look of astonishment, Jason Gao felt a pang in his heart, unsure of how to respond at that moment.
"You promised me before we got married that you would never divorce," Lily said, his silence making her feel as if she had a bone stuck in her throat.
Jason Gao furrowed his brows, his expression darkening: "Those promises were made on the condition that Jessica wouldnt come back, but now that shes back, those words naturally dont count."
The promises that had seemed as solid as mountains were now dismissed with a wave of his hand.
"What am I then, what is my existence?" The bitterness in Lilys heart overflowed like a flood.
Their meeting six years ago had led Lily to believe that Jason Gao would be her true love.
She never expected that everything was just a step-by-step trap to pull her into an abyss.
The man loved only her face—the one that resembled Jessica Shens.
Over three years, he had trained her to mimic that womans every gesture and expression.
For him, she had given up being herself, becoming completely another person.
But now...
Looking back, Lily trembled all over.
But her grief and sorrow were seen by Jason Gao as nothing but cheap existences.
"My patience has its limits," he said, his tone carrying a chill.
Over the years, he had transformed Lily from a plain duckling into a pampered lady of leisure.
They had both gotten what they wanted; it was time for a clean break.
He had done his part.
"Have the child aborted, divorce, and leave Sunnyville," his voice hit Lilys eardrums, over and over, like needles pricking.
Lily cracked a bitter, self-mocking smile.
Leave Sunnyville—was he that afraid of that woman finding out about her existence?
"I agree to leave, but I must be allowed to keep the child," Lily made a concession.
She didnt want her child to be part of this dirty deal.
Nor did she want to deprive herself of the last chance to be a mother.
But Jason Gaos words plunged Lily into utter despair.
"You dont have the right to choose," Jason said, picking up his phone and dialing Secretary Zhangs number, then turning and striding away.
Watching his resolute back, Lily felt a desolation in her heart.
It was as if her heart had been pierced by a sword, over and over, bleeding profusely.
Really, not a single bit of past affection to consider?
...
In the afternoon, Secretary Zhang indeed arrived at the Gao residence, intending to take Lily to the hospital.
Lily had no choice but to go with him.
After a series of preoperative checks, Lily sat on a bench waiting for the results.
Outside the glass door, a familiar tall figure was helping a waddling, pregnant woman out of the obstetrics room.
The man had a smile in his eyes, and the womans face was filled with the joy of impending motherhood.
Lily suddenly stood up, staring at the two—
Her husband, Jason Gao, and Jessica Shen!
They were together!
Looking at Jessicas prominently swollen belly, an uncontrollable thought flashed through Lilys mind.
Could it be—
That the child in Jessicas belly belonged to Jason Gao?
" Shes coming back, and I must clear the obstacles for her," Jasons words echoed in Lilys ears.
So thats it!
A strong sense of dizziness assaulted Lilys brain, making her head feel as if it would explode.
She fled in a panic, not having the courage to continue watching them.
By the time Lily reached the stairwell to steady her emotions, Jessica had come towards her alone.
"Long time no see, sister," Jessica said.
The word "sister" was filled with irony to Lilys ears.
"Youre a Shen, Im a White, Im not your sister," Lily averted her gaze, her voice conveying distance.
"What does the surname matter? We have the same father anyway," Jessica laughed, seemingly not caring about Lilys reaction, "How have you been coping with Amin? I heard hes always treated you as me, it must have been tough for you."
Lily straightened her back, her face undisturbed: "Miss Shen, Amin is my husband, who he treats me as is our family matter, and you, an outsider, seem to be overstepping."
"Outsider? If it werent for me leaving, would you have had the chance to get into Amins bed? Just like your mother, an ungrateful lowlife!" Jessica lowered her voice, her eyes filled with malice.
Hearing her curse her mother, Lily lost control of her emotions and shouted, "Dont talk about my mom!"
Jessica seemed to be greatly frightened, her face showing panic, and she stumbled backward, losing her balance and falling straight back!
"Ah—!" she screamed.
In an instant, beneath the messy skirt, bright red blood began to seep out...
