One Night Stand

On a winter night with a light drizzle, a cold wind seeped in through the not-quite-closed window, chilling to the bone.

Clothes were scattered throughout the stairwell and corridors, and Emily Johnson stood at the door, expressionless, listening to the movements coming from within the room. In their bedroom, her husband, David Lee, had once again brought a woman home for the night.

Everyone was aware that Emilys title as Mrs. Lee was a sham; her husbands name frequently appeared in the entertainment tabloids, always alongside different actresses and models.

Emily knew this was Davids way of humiliating her, wanting to see her in pain and embarrassment. But she refused to give in; she had endured for three years and would not let this minor ache in her heart affect her anymore.

After the storm had passed, the woman wrapped in Emilys robe came out, smiling coquettishly, "Sister, Mr. Lee asked you to come in and clean up. Im going to take a bath; I feel so sticky and uncomfortable."

Such blatant showing off had little effect on Emily, whose heart was already riddled with holes.

She took a deep breath to calm herself before walking in.

The room was still filled with a strong, nauseating smell.

"There are new sheets and covers in the cabinet; Ill get them changed," Emily said, only glancing briefly at David Lee in bed before lowering her eyelashes. Her voice was calm, betraying little emotion.

David Lees eyes narrowed slightly as he looked at the indifferent Emily, "Come here!"

The commanding tone was filled with displeasure.

This was a prelude to his making trouble, and Emilys heart trembled at the bottom of her heart.

Her resistance caused a flash of anger in David Lees eyes, and he repeated impatiently, "Come here! Are you deaf?"

Emilys body trembled, her clenched fists turning white at the knuckles as she walked to the bedside, head down, unwilling to look at him.

"What do you need?" she asked.

He had dismissed all the servants just to torment her.

David Lees lips curled into a cruel smile as he pulled Emilys wrist and yanked her roughly.

In an instant, Emily, who had been sitting on the bed, was pressed beneath him.

He still smelled of that womans perfume, making her want to vomit. Emily bit her lip and turned her head away.

"Isnt this what youve always wanted? What are you pretending for?" David Lee looked down at her with a cold, disdainful gaze.

The terrible memories of the past flooded back, causing Emily to tremble involuntarily.

"I didnt," Emily insisted, knowing her defense was futile.

She had never expected David Lees love, nor had she ever thought of interfering with his relationship with Mandy Johnson. But no matter what she said, in his eyes, it was just shameless sophistry.

He had never believed her.

"Didnt you? When you promised my mother that you would get pregnant soon, it wasnt this attitude," David Lee sneered.

"That was because..." Her words were cut off by a painful groan, and he showed no mercy.

She was in agony, her heart feeling as if it was being carved by a knife.

Tears slid into her hair, silently.

Emily wanted to forget how he had just been with another woman, wanted to forget that he still carried traces of others on him.

But the more she tried to forget, the more vividly she remembered.

"I became difficult to conceive because of whom, dont you know?" Emily asked him with a bitter smile.

David Lees gaze was cold and disgusted: "Isnt this your karma?"

Karma?

Ha, he was right. It was indeed karma.

It was the karma for saving him recklessly, and it was the karma for having a crush on him.
