“These files need to be typed and sent to my email before work this afternoon.”
As soon as Emma came back from the restroom, Mr. Johnson brought over seven or eight large folders and dropped them in front of her, then said coldly.
Emma was stunned, organized the folders on the desk, and looked up, wanting to say something, but Mr. Johnson had already left. She opened a folder, and it was full of papers with at least ten pages! Emma quickly checked her phone and realized it was already past noon, and work would start at 1:30 pm. That meant she had to finish so much content in less than three and a half hours!
“Cough... Are you new?” Emma was about to bang her head on the desk when a female voice sounded. She turned her head and saw a girl with a ponytail looking at her with big eyes.
“Uh... Yes...” Emma replied.
“Tsk tsk! Did you offend Mr. Johnson as soon as you got here?” the girl asked sympathetically.
Emma helplessly scratched her head, realizing he was doing this on purpose!
“You must have,” the girl said with a regretful look. “A girl before you got in trouble with him and was overloaded with work until she resigned! The workload was huge, the time was short, and if you didn’t finish on time, there were penalties!”
Emma was stunned. Was Mr. Johnson that formidable?
“You’re still spacing out! Hurry up and work! Oh, by the way, my name is Mia. Good luck!” Mia said before turning back to her work.
“Thank you, Mia! My name is Emma!”
Emma said, and Mia winked at Emma before continuing her work. Emma also opened the folders and started typing on her computer...
Fortunately, she had typed a lot in school, such as PPTs, papers, and speeches. Emma was determined and focused, vowing not to let him look down on her.
Time passed quickly, and it seemed faster than usual.
It was finally time to get off work, and the office was full of cheers as everyone was packing up and discussing what to eat for lunch. Only Emma was still typing desperately.
“Come on!” Mia came over to cheer Emma up before leaving with another girl.
Emma looked up and nodded at Mia with a smile.
“Who is she?”
“She’s new.”
“Why isn’t she leaving?”
“Mr. Johnson...”
“Wow, poor girl...”
Mia and another girl left the office, chatting as they went.
Emma’s eyes were sore, and she took some eye drops from her bag and put two drops in before continuing to work.
She never expected that on her first day, she wouldn’t even have a chance to eat lunch. Indeed, life is full of surprises, and everything was going well until Mr. Johnson came along. But complaining was useless; she had to finish typing these documents.
“Hey.”
A girl who was sleeping on her desk, suddenly woke up angrily and shouted towards Emma.
Aren’t they all gone? Who else is there?
Emma looked up and saw a girl with a boyish haircut staring at her angrily, rubbing her eyes.
“Are you... talking to me?” Emma asked, surprised.
“Yeah! It’s the middle of the day, and if you’re not going to eat, stop typing in the office! How can I sleep with all that noise?” The girl with short hair was upset.
“I’m so sorry! I have no choice, please understand!” Emma apologized.
The girl rubbed her eyes, looked at Emma, and her attitude softened a bit. “Are you new?”
“Yes... My name is Emma,” Emma replied.
“Alright, it’s fine! My name is Lily. There’s a laptop in the bottom drawer of your desk. If you have to keep typing, take it to the café to the right downstairs,” Lily said.
Emma smiled and squatted down to open the drawer. Sure enough, there was a laptop.
“Don’t disturb me anymore! Close the door when you leave,” Lily said, then lay back down on the table like a cool guy.
“Thank you!”
“You’re welcome!”
Emma left the office quietly with her bag, laptop, and documents, gently closing the door behind her.
The café was large, and even at noon, there were quite a few customers. Emma chose a corner to sit in, ordered a latte, and continued typing her documents.
She hadn’t typed for more than ten minutes when her phone rang. It was a call from her college friend, Mia. Emma had no choice but to put on her headphones and answer the call while working.
“Hey, Emma! You said you’d call me. How’s the company?” Mia asked as soon as she answered.
“The company is great, but there’s a pervert here!” Emma said unhappily.
“A pervert? What kind of pervert? A lecher?” Mia shouted on the other end.
“Keep it down! My eardrum will cry!” Emma rubbed her ears. “He’s not a lecher! He’s a very, very mean manager! I haven’t even had lunch yet, and I’m still typing documents.”
“Really? You’ve only been there for half a day, and the workload is already so heavy?” Mia asked incredulously.
“What workload? It’s all because of that manager! He thinks I got the job through my uncle, so he’s making it hard for me and wants me to quit,” Emma pouted, feeling wronged.
“Aw, come on! What’s wrong with joining your uncle’s company? It’s not like you joined his uncle’s company! I think he’s just jealous that you’re Mr. Smith’s niece!” Mia said.
“Exactly! It’s not his uncle’s company! He gave me so many documents to finish before the afternoon shift starts, and it’s almost noon. It’s really too much,” Emma looked at the time and continued typing.
“I say, why put up with this? Just tell your uncle, or better yet, quit and find another company!” Mia suggested.
“Neither!”
Emma rejected Mia’s suggestions outright.
“Telling my uncle would be too melodramatic! Not to mention that manager completely underestimates me, maybe my uncle would think I’m too weak! He told me not to back down from small failures, and I can’t just listen without acting! And quitting? That’s even worse! He’d be happy if I left, but I’m not going to! Such a great opportunity to work at my uncle’s company is not easy to come by, and I have to cherish it!”
Mia on the other end of the call was almost speechless from Emma’s words.
“Alright, alright! You figure it out. I have something to take care of, let’s talk later tonight!”
“Okay, I’ll keep working!”
“Bye!”
“Bye~”
