Jane Eyre awoke the next day. The strong smell of disinfectant in the hospital irritated her senses as she stared blankly at the ceiling. Her hand slowly moved to her abdomen, acutely aware that she had lost the most important thing: her... child.
Two streams of tears slid down her temples, silently seeping into the pillow.
The wounds on her body could heal, but what about the wounds in her heart?
Rolling down the stairs, Janes abdomen bled profusely. She pleaded with Atticus Finch to save their child, but he, cold-blooded as he was, did not pause for a moment, rushing out of the mansion with the unconscious Catherine Capulet in his arms, completely disregarding his wife.
Her heart ached as if it had been stabbed countless times, making it difficult for Jane to breathe.
The moment the door opened, Jane closed her eyes.
"Atticus, did I really hurt Jane like this?" Catherines eyes welled up with tears that flowed incessantly, her expression one of vulnerability.
Catherine, with Jane as a cushion, was not seriously injured.
"Its alright, dont be upset. You had an episode," Atticus comforted Catherine, pulling her into an embrace as his deep gaze fell on Jane, whose face was as pale as snow on the hospital bed.
Seeing Jane, whose face was pale to the point of translucence, Atticus felt a pang in his heart, as if struck by something.
"Leave the show behind and get out," Janes voice was hoarse. She had intended to pretend to be asleep, but the two were simply repulsive.
"Jane, it wasnt intentional. Can you forgive me? I didnt know I had an episode. I know what your brother did to me has nothing to do with you..."
"Dont touch me!" Janes hand was met with a sharp refusal as she reached out.
"Jane Eyre, dont be ungrateful! Catherine came to see you on purpose. What Lin Jie did to her, and Catherine still considers you a friend," Atticus spoke coldly, the strange emotions that had just sprouted instantly replaced by indifference.
"Atticus, dont be angry. Its understandable for Jane to hate me. After all, its because of me that you lost the child."
Catherine bit her lower lip, her face streaked with tears, looking pitiable, yet in a moment unseen by Atticus, she revealed a triumphant smile to Jane.
"Then you should repay with your life!" Mentioning the lost child, Jane seemed to lose her sanity like a wild beast, jumping off the bed and fiercely grabbing Catherines neck.
"Jane Eyre, youre mad!" Atticus stepped forward and violently pushed her to the ground, then carefully protected Catherine in his arms.
"Ha... Im mad? Even if I am mad, its because of you two. Atticus Finch, youre not human. The child is dead, and youre not sad at all, but you treat the murderer like a treasure in your hands. What kind of thing are you?" Janes eyes, filled with hatred, looked at Atticus and the woman in his arms, who returned a victorious smile.
"I said, youre not qualified to bear my child. As for the child being lost, its just as I wished. Consider it as paying off Lin Jies debt! Because of your brother, Catherine lost the right to be a mother." Atticuss voice turned even colder.
In his memory, Jane Eyre was always proper and fond of laughter. When did she become as vicious as a resentful woman in the deep palace?
"My brother is innocent. Its Catherine..."
"Lin Jie, dont come over! Stay away from me!" Janes words were cut off as Catherine suddenly screamed, breaking free from Atticuss arms, covering her ears and squatting in the corner, muttering to herself.
"Lin Jie, dont come over, I beg you!"
"Catherine, dont pretend anymore. Youre not crazy at all!" Jane, disregarding the pain in her stomach, stood up, shaking with anger.
"Slap!"
"Jane Eyre, shut up! Youre getting more and more vicious!" Atticus slapped Jane hard across the face, almost gnashing his teeth as he spoke.
