A week had passed, and Edward Cullen had neither replied to the message nor returned home. Jane Eyre couldnt guess his thoughts, so she simply stopped trying. The frequency of her nosebleeds was increasing, and her hair was falling out in handfuls. The pain in her bones made her rely on alcohol to alleviate it, which seemed to have the effect of numbing herself as well.
"Give me the strongest liquor," Jane said in a bar, her gaze unfocused as it fell on the men and women in the dance floor.
Vibrant life, endless passion; these were things she should have had, but the former was already at the end of withering, and the latter was all dedicated to Edward. Now, she was left with only a decaying body.
Jane curled her lips and laughed, downing the liquor by her side in one gulp. Just as she was about to order another, she heard a familiar voice.
"Miss Eyre, do you really not want your life?" Adam Wilmont said sternly. He never expected to run into his patient on a rare night out.
Jane was somewhat surprised: "Doctor, what are you doing here?"
Adam looked at her coldly. In his heart, Jane was not a good woman.
Jane seemed to sense his thoughts. Perhaps it was the lively atmosphere, or perhaps it was the alcohol that was strong, she lost her usual calmness and opened up.
"I know you dont like me, and to be honest, I dont like myself like this either! But I hate it, Im annoyed! Ive been with my husband for nine years, and what do I get? He has a child with another woman, and I have a terminal illness. Its karma, right? Not listening to the old folks advice, insisting on believing in that damn love. So I took a gamble and proposed divorce. Doctor, do you think I deserve to die?"
Adam pursed his lips, not expecting to hear this.
Jane looked at him, her eyes full of bitterness: "Doctor, I dont want to die. Im really too ashamed to face my deceased parents, but I cant live either because I have no money. You know what? Im not afraid of chemotherapy, its that I cant afford it..."
She leaned on the bar, unable to hold back and wailed loudly. The self-respect she had built up crumbled at that moment.
Adam looked at the woman in front of him, his eyes dark, and couldnt help but take a deep breath and say, "There will be a solution to everything, as long as you tell me, you want to live."
...
Edward parked his car downstairs, thinking about the text message Jane had sent, and felt a surge of anger in his heart.
Did Jane really not care about him, actually proposing divorce so easily? Just because he had been a bit too fresh outside!
Edward opened the car window and took a hard puff of a cigarette. He was just looking for something new, but he never thought about being apart from Jane.
The lights of a car flashed in the distance, and Edward looked subconsciously, then suddenly widened his eyes. The passenger in the car coming was Jane!
"Dr. Wilmont, thank you so much for tonight," Jane said as she got out of the car, polite.
"Youre welcome, come to the hospital tomorrow, and Ill prescribe you some painkillers," Adam said with a rare smile, suppressing the pity in his heart, and drove away.
Jane watched the tail lights disappear and was about to go upstairs when a pair of big hands grabbed her, slamming her against the wall.
Edwards eyes were red and he gnashed his teeth: "Jane Eyre, youre actually having an affair with another man!"
Jane touched her aching waist, sweating in the cold, and said, "Thats a doctor, Im not as playful as you."
Edward was taken aback. He didnt expect Jane to sarcasm him, and he lost his mind in anger: "What, are you trying to find a man to pretend to be a doctor, to say you have a terminal illness to cover up an affair?"
Jane suddenly burst into tears, how did they get to this step of trading harsh words?
"Edward, I do have leukemia," she said.
Edward roughly pulled Jane into the house, loosened his tie, and said coldly, "I just finished talking, and you can make up a leukemia. Jane Eyre, youre pretty quick-witted!"
Janes breathing was stifled, her calm black eyes staring at Edward, and suddenly she lost the strength to explain.
He didnt show the slightest surprise at the "leukemia" she said, only doubt and sarcasm.
"Believe it or not, hes really a doctor, and he wont like a married woman like me," Jane said lightly, her eyes full of forced indifference.
"Is this your reason for divorce? To be single and roll around with someone else?" Edward glared at her, unspeakably terrifying.
"Edward, dont think everyone is as filthy as you are," Janes bones under her skin started to ache again, and she couldnt help but frown.
"Im filthy? Have I spoiled you, daring to do anything, even daring to say divorce!" Edward threw Jane onto the bed.
"No!" Jane turned her head and screamed.
"Edward, dont force me to hate you," Jane gritted her teeth and said.
The man paused, then took her forcefully.
Jane didnt speak anymore, her fingers tightly gripping the sheets, her teeth biting her arm fiercely, a dull pain in her heart.
She always knew Edwards power, but before today, this man was very restrained and cherished her, just a small misunderstanding, it made him show his true colors.
It seems that she is no different from those people outside him.
Edward looked down at Jane, his voice fierce: "Do you still want a divorce?"
Jane didnt speak.
He frowned, leaned down and twisted the womans face, but when he saw it clearly, his blood almost stopped flowing.
The woman under him, half of her face was blood, her arm was bitten to the point of flesh and blood, but she was still stubborn and silent.
"Youre crazy!" Edward exclaimed, and immediately got up to call.
"Edward, Im not going to the hospital," Jane shouted with strength.
"Dont make a fuss."
"I said, Im not going to the hospital!" Jane suddenly screamed.
Edward was stunned by her, got up and left the bedroom, and after a while, he brought a first aid kit and carefully disinfected and bandaged her.
Jane looked at him sideways, struggling to pull out a smile: "Edward, were you satisfied just now?"
The mans facial muscles moved, and he forcibly endured without speaking.
Jane didnt care either, muttering to herself: "I remember when I first got together with you, everyone laughed at you for doting on me like an eyeball, and I was proud and proud, glad that I didnt choose the wrong person."
Edward held her fingers, his heart tightened: "Dont say it, Jane."
"You said I was afraid of pain, so you let me not have children, but how did I not think that if I dont give birth, there are people who are willing to give birth to you, right?"
"Jane, its my fault, dont say it," Edward held her in his arms, and he had a premonition that he shouldnt let Jane continue.
Janes eyes were empty, as if he didnt exist: "You had a woman for the first time, and I knew it, I endured for three years, just because I couldnt let go of the nine years we were together."
"But how many nine years can there be in life? So I dont care how many women you have outside, and I dont care who you gave the shares to," Jane pushed him and said, "But Edward, Im tired, I dont love you anymore."
Edwards body trembled, and the place full of heart was empty in an instant.
