Thunder roared, and heavy rain poured down, beating against the windows as the wind rustled the leaves in the yard. In the downpour, Emily Thompson, a pregnant woman with over seven months to go, knelt shivering in her thin dress, while the servants inside had grown numb to the sight. Every year, on this day, Emily was forced to kneel in the courtyard for a day and a night.
