Catherine Earnshaw bit her lip as Edward Cullens words pierced her heart. She was terrified that Jane Eyre would return and, with her mere existence, snatch everything Catherine had barely begun to grasp. The thing about fears, Catherine knew too well, was that they often became realities when you least expected them to.
Early one morning, the campus was abuzz with news. "Have you heard?" her roommate, hills, burst in with excitement.
"What is it that has you so thrilled?" vivi teased.
"The big goddess, Jane Eyre, is coming back," she announced, casting a sidelong glance at Catherine, who was sitting at her desk, pretending to read.
Catherines page-turning hand paused for a mere half-second before she resumed her reading as if nothing had happened.
"What? She just left, right? Why is she coming back so soon?"
...
Catherines eyes scanned the pages, but her mind was elsewhere, focused entirely on the conversation, afraid to miss a single word.
She gathered her bag, pretending she was off to the library, but as soon as she left the dormitory, she ran in the opposite direction as if a switch had been flipped,Desperately running towards her destination.
"Hows the investigation going?" Edward Cullen tapped his cigarette case, pulling out a cigarette and placing it between his lips without lighting it.
His friend,陆北, replied, "Your hunch was right. Catherine Earnshaw must have prepared everything in advance. I checked the surveillance footage, but its been deleted, including that of the hotel, so its impossible to investigate."
"Have you checked the surveillance companies?"
"The surveillance companies usually keep duplicates, but one is in the United States and the other in Canada. Its very difficult to get them out. We dont want to involve the family to avoid leaks."
"Investigate the students who attended the party that day and the hotel staff. I dont believe Catherine Earnshaw has the ability to do all this by herself!"
Edward watched as Catherine ran towards him, his expression calm, as if he knew she would come.
Catherine stood before him, panting slightly, her hand lightly pulling at his wrist. "What... what are you going to do?"
Indeed, she couldnt hold back any longer.
Edward was momentarily stunned before he smiled and countered, "What do you think I should do?"
Catherine withdrew her hand and whispered stubbornly, "You promised me."
"So you came to remind me?"
Catherine was silent, lowering her head.
This pitiful appearance stirred an inexplicable restlessness in Edward. "I used to think you were an innocent girl; it seems I underestimated you."
Catherines lips curved into a mocking smile. "Before, did you ever pay attention to me?"
No, your eyes were only on Jane Eyre; your world only had her! When did you ever notice me, the clown!
Edward answered truthfully, "No, I didnt pay attention before, and I dont want to now. I just thought you should be that kind of girl."
Catherine smiled brilliantly, "No, I wont be the kind of girl in your eyes because that kind of girl dies quickly, dont you know? These days, kindness also requires capital."
Edward felt as if he had been pierced through, unable to articulate where this feeling came from.
"Edward..." At that moment, a sweet voice drifted from afar, marking the beginning of Catherine Earnshaws nightmare.
