However, Edward Hunter did not give Sophia Thompson the chance to wallow in her pain. He gently bit her earlobe and whispered, "Your precious sons infusion fee is six figures again today. Arent you going to earn some for him?"
Mentioning her child, a flicker of reaction appeared on Sophias otherwise lifeless face. With tears welling up in her eyes, she bit her lip and looked at him, hoarsely pleading, "Dont stop his medicine..."
Edwards lips curled into an indifferent smile, his eyes narrowing with a cold glint. This woman only knew how to beg him when it came to that illegitimate child.
"That depends on how well you perform."
Sophia frowned and endured the pain, slowly lying down compliantly, closing her eyes, and letting him take what he wanted.
She told herself over and over in her heart, even for the sake of her son, Maxwell Jr., she had to endure. Hadnt she been doing this for years?
...
Time passed unknown.
Sophia dragged her aching body out of the hospital bed, staring blankly at the empty surroundings, feeling as if everything she did with Edward Hunter was a dream.
She laughed bitterly at herself. He was always like this, leaving immediately after doing what he had to do, a paragon among jerks. Yet, she was hopelessly in love with this jerk of a man.
"Madam is awake. This is the medicine Mr. Hunter instructed me to give you," said Edwards assistant, Roger, respectfully approaching with two pills quietly resting in his palm.
Sophia glanced at them indifferently and let out a mocking laugh.
Birth control pills.
Edward was that afraid she would get pregnant?
Her fingers, thin and weak, picked up the pills and swallowed them ruthlessly without water, letting them dryly slide down her throat.
"Lets go, Madam, Ill drive you home."
Sophia nodded, moving like a puppet controlled by others.
At the hospital entrance, inside the Rolls-Royce, Sophia looked at the mans profile, his features sharply defined, lazily shaking out a cigarette.
"Mommy!"
Suddenly, the familiar and childish voice of Maxwell Jr. came through.
Sophias body jolted, afraid she had heard wrong, her eyes moistening with a mix of urgency and joy as she rushed towards the source of the voice.
Maxwell Jr. jumped out of the car and excitedly ran into her arms. The childs thin arms didnt have much strength but still hugged her tightly, afraid that his mother would leave the next moment.
Sophia looked down at his face, her voice trembling and choked, "Maxwell, be good, let mommy see, why have you lost weight again?"
Her Maxwell Jr. was only 5 years old but looked much smaller than his peers.
He suffered from congenital leukemia, and the doctors had said it was a miracle he survived at all.
"Mommy, Maxwell Jr. missed you so much, I couldnt eat."
His soft voice clung to her ear, deliberately acting coquettish, being inseparable from her.
Sophia bit her teeth, unable to hold back the tears that instantly gushed out.
"Im sorry, its all mommys fault..." Sophia pressed her lips tightly, choking and unable to say a word.
She was a useless mother, hating that she couldnt be with him every moment.
She knew that this meeting with him would be brief, just a little "reward" from Edward Hunter, thats all.
Sophia looked up and met his indifferent, cold eyes.
Then, she saw his fingers slightly move.
In an instant, two burly men appeared from nowhere, grabbing the childs arms and shoulders, and forcefully snatched him from her embrace!
"Mommy! Dont grab me! I want my mommy!"
The child, after all, couldnt accept the separation, crying with a hoarse voice, but his strength was insufficient and soon weakened.
